Hewitt's Best Employers Study was conducted in Austria for the fifth time. More than thirty companies registered for the study, twenty-one of them took part in all three study components (Employee Survey, HR Audit and Leadership Team Survey) which are all relevant for being included in the ranking.

On June 5, the results of the Austrian 2007 study and the ranking of the Best Employers were presented in the course of a press conference in the Le Méridien Vienna.

What Distinguishes the Best from the Rest?

Inspired Leadership
The 2007 study shows – similar to previous years – the key role top management plays as a differentiating factor. Best Employers have leadership teams realizing the essential role of employees for a company to be successful. Accordingly they treat their employees as their most valued asset. Compared to other companies, leaders of The Best are better visible and accessible which helps to build trust among employees. They are relentless in their communication with employees about the company's direction, business strategy, goals, and progress towards these goals. Moreover the specific leadership teams at these Best Employers also share a common set of values and exhibit closer alignment and consistency in points of view.

Unique Company Culture
Best Employers create a unique employment experience and hire people for "culture fit". They emphasize promotion from within and identify high-potentials ("Homegrown Talent") to ensure that future leaders at their organizations continue to promote the same beliefs and values. Furthermore, Best Employers are more likely to celebrate successes and to recognize employee contributions and suggestions.

Aligned HR Practices and Excellent Execution
Best Employers do not necessarily have more people programs than other companies, but the HR programs and practices at The Best are aligned with business strategies and are executed effectively. Best Employers make sure that HR practices and programs are relevant to the business and valuable to employees. Their employees have a very clear understanding of corporate goals and objectives and are better able to articulate them accordingly.

Focus on Talent Management
Best Employers provide more opportunities for employees to develop and grow professionally and personally which is also reflected in a comparatively high employee satisfaction with career opportunities. They know what kind of people they need to attract and retain to achieve their business goals. They view talent management as a critical investment and are more likely to identify high potentials and provide them with accelerated learning opportunities. Furthermore, they more actively use the skills and knowledge of elderly and more experienced employees.

Strong Sense of Accountability
Best Employers instill a strong sense of responsibility in their employees. They demonstrate respect for their people by holding them accountable for results and recognizing their achievement with enthusiasm and celebrations. Employees have a clear understanding of what is expected of them because leaders communicate with them frequently about business direction and company goals. Consequently, employees have a better understanding of the direction the company is moving and their own roles.

Higher Employee Engagement
As documented by many studies, companies with highly engaged employees have fewer absences due to illness, as well as a lower fluctuation and higher revenues. Thus, the success of a company is significantly influenced by the engagement of employees. While more than two thirds of the Best Employers' employees are highly engaged (69%), the average engagement score for all participating companies amounts to 51%. The Best create a work environment that inspires employees to do their best work every day and to contribute more than what is normally required to complete their work tasks.

Best Employer Branding is Independent From Industries
Hewitt has completed numerous Best Employers Studies around the globe and all of them reveal that achieving high engagement scores and implementing successful HR programs – in short, becoming a Best Employer – neither depends on a company's industry nor on its size.
